Warning: Canon compliant :-(

1

She'd been looking at him quizzically for some months after beginning her post at Hogwarts. He avoided her when he could, kept things cursory when he couldn't, until the day she walked into his office and sat across from him, meeting his eyes with quiet determination.

He'd expected another reprimand about his Slytherins and their conduct in Muggle Studies. Instead, she calmly said, "Legilimens."

And she saw.

His hand was on his wand, Obliviate on his lips, but the way she looked at him, open, trusting, daring, what he said instead was, "Legilimens."

And he saw.

And so it began.

2

"I shouldn't have done that," she said.

"No," he agreed. "You shouldn't." He nestled his face in the crook of her neck, and breathed in.

"Obliviate me, if you must," she said. "For security's sake."

"I trust you," he said, though it wrenched him terribly to admit it to her.

She ran a hand down his back. "Do you trust my Occlumency to--even if--against--?"

He scowled, and buried his face deeper. "Perhaps it won't come to that."

Foolish, they both suspected, but she had already seen his penchant for unreasonable hope, hidden deep beneath the sardonically rational facade.

3

He lay on his back, arms folded tightly over his chest.

"He's really not that bad, Severus."

Severus felt his nostrils flare. "An arrogant, attention-seeking git who thinks he's the exception to every rule. Just like his father."

"A boy, a young boy, under constant scrutiny and in continual danger, hardly knowing what to do with all the attention being heaped upon him for having the good fortune to survive--"

"Enough," snarled Severus. "This subject is closed."

Charity sighed. "Just remember, you're supposed to be helping him."

He kept his eyes fixed on the dungeon ceiling. "I never forget."

4

"Find someone else," he said.

"Rather late for that," she said.

"Need I remind you," he intoned through gritted teeth, "who I am and what I've done?"

She glanced at the Dark Mark on his arm before fixing her eyes upon his.

"No," she said. "You needn't."

He turned away so she wouldn't see.

"I know what I'm doing," she said.

"No, you don't," he whispered.

"Either way, it's my choice." She wrapped her arm over his side, pulling him close. "And I have chosen."

He kept his back to her, so she wouldn't see, but of course she knew.

5

"You have no future with me, Charity."

"We have no future without you, Severus."

His eyes snapped open.

She raised her eyebrows.

He looked away. "I'm not that important."

"Dunderhead."

He looked back to her, arching one eyebrow.

She rested a hand against his cheek. "Beloved dunderhead," she murmured.

His lip curled. "How many points shall I take away?"

"The point," she said, leaning in to kiss him, "that the part which you are playing is absolutely crucial to any hope we have of winning this war."

He snorted, but it was muffled by her lips pressed firmly against his.

6

This could only end badly.

Severus feathered his fingertips through Charity's hair. She slept on, her face graced by the faintest smile.

Very badly.

It could only last till year's end, at best. Doubly bound by oath and by honor, unless he could find a way out, there would come a time when she would despise him, when everyone would despise him, think him a traitor to the very cause to which he had devoted his life.

He reclined alongside her and held her close.

Her heart would be broken. It couldn't be helped. No sense in hastening the day.

7

He had tried to warn her.

He had.

Still, he blamed only himself.

He should have broken it off. He should never have allowed it to begin.

He glanced around the table, wondering if he--that--knew, or if it were but a coincidence: a horrible, horrible coincidence.

For the second time in his life, he would lose a woman he loved at the hands of--

"Severus... please..."

He Occluded his mind, he had to Occlude. He held her eyes with his, steady, impassive, and hoped that in his Occlumency she would see; and, in seeing, that she would understand.

Oh. My. God. It's scary and brilliant and so, so sad how totally this fits with canon! Right down to that "Severus ... please... "

WAH. Guh. Yow. I almost want to know that Charity Burbage had red hair.

Meanwhile, this is brilliant! Severus as doomed to love muggle-borns; doomed to be complicit in their deaths; doomed to *watch* OMG. The Occlumency is a perfect, perfect notion!

I love where she calls him Dunderhead, and then, beloved dunderhead. This is so touching, and the exchange seems to bring Charity and their relationship into live like nothing else JKR wrote possibly could.

(Not that it affects the brilliance of this fic, but there is one tiny typo - an omission - in this sentence: "The point," she said, leaning in to kiss him, "that the part which you are playing is absolutely crucial to any hope we have of winning this war." Should be ...in to kiss him, "*is that the part....")

This Charity comes across as a thoughtful, powerful witch with a good brain and a capacity for independent thought, action, choice (OMG yes: she chose Snape!). And I deeply, deeply thank you for that, because the Charity in Chapter 1 of DH is just... such a throwaway person. Which was so annoying, such arrogant writing, such disrespect to both characters and the readers, that it incensed me with DH right in that first chapter! (Not that there wasn't plenty of additional fuel for the fire.)

So again - thank you so VERY very much! Your fic just saved a character's *soul*.

(And look! perfect icon for this alas, all too common problem!)

Thank you! It may be that Charity was simply appealing to him as a colleague she recognized, but that "Severus... please..." struck me as bespeaking a familiarity, a trust, that spoke volumes of unwritten backstory. Friendship, at least? And the parallel with Dumbledore's identical plea seems more than coincidental, especially since the opening chapter of DH was originally written to be the end of HBP.

Here, of course, with her knowing all about his spying and double agency, she is most likely pleading (though of course he's not seeing that, just then) that he not give away the game by a futile attempt to save her. Like Dumbledore, she's saying, Please do what you have to do.

I almost want to know that Charity Burbage had red hair.

Oh, I hope not! ;-) I really see her as someone Severus fell in love with for her own sake, not as a Lily substitute.

The Occlumency is a perfect, perfect notion!

Thank you. I thought it would throw Severus off guard; I doubt he expected the new Muggle Studies prof to be an accomplished Legilimens and Occlumens--probably not as exceptional as Severus, but certainly skilled.

And yes, I rather love that she throws one of his pet phrases--"Dunderhead"--back at him. ;-) And gets away with it. Certainly speaks of familiarity and not being thrown by Sev's crusty persona!

but there is one tiny typo - an omission - in this sentence

No, there isn't. The construction is intentional. It follows as an answer to his question:

"How many points shall I take away?"

"The point that the part you are playing..."

i.e., "Take away the one point that..."

Plus, as it stands, the drabble is exactly one hundred words. Believe me, every word is counted and considered. ;-)

OMG yes: she chose Snape!

Heh. I always thought it was highly reasonable that someone would be able to get along with him. Hell, we saw it in canon, albeit in nonromantic relationships. And I just cannot believe that loving Lily in his youth and harboring deep regret for her death would mean he would have carried an eternal virginal torch for her and never so much as attempted any other relationships.

Of course, given that JKR tells us NOTHING about Charity except what we see in Ch. 1 of DH, anyone writing about her basically has to invent her from whole cloth and hope for the best. ;-) But I do love the irony of the Slytherin Head of House, with a past guilty history of bias against Muggles and Muggleborns, falling in love with the professor of Muggle Studies!

Finally: Yes. I love that icon. ;-) Thank you so much for all of your thoughtful comments!

Well, *you* saw that, and now I see it, but... sadly, I have my doubts about JKR. Because even if it was meant to be evocative, it went nowhere. There was no meaning produced in DH, it was just the early warning of a lot of pointless deaths (and more, like endless camping) ahead.

Like Dumbledore, she's saying, Please do what you have to do.

Yes - and you set this up so clearly! Even in something as short as a drabble series.

Re red hair: Oh, I hope not! ;-) I really see her as someone Severus fell in love with for her own sake, not as a Lily substitute.

Agree! I winced as I typed that. THANK YOU FOR NOT MAKING SNAPE BE ALL IN LOVE WITH THE PAST. That's so creepy.
OH. You're right. NOT a typo. DOH. *irons hands*

Well, I just missed that good line of yours totally, didn't I? *hangs head* Bad me, bad pine. Sloppy reading! Although, this does give me a very good reason to go back and read the whole thing again! :D :D

I do love the irony of the Slytherin Head of House, with a past guilty history of bias against Muggles and Muggleborns, falling in love with the professor of Muggle Studies!

And I love you making it happen! Although a 10K word fic would be pretty awesome CB/SS too. ;-) While I'm at it, I'll specify that I'd want to see a Charity_after_DH to go with Snape_after_DH (and hell, why shouldn't she be the one who, from her safe-house at Aberforth's, comes into the Shack to rescue Snape?)

Why yes, I am a demanding reader. LOL

But ... this drabble series is *totally* all I need to address the Charity/Severus sadness I never thought could be fixed! Such huge yayys to you for this!

Kind of like Deathly Hallows. ;-)

There was no meaning produced in DH, it was just the early warning of a lot of pointless deaths (and more, like endless camping) ahead.

That sounds like a good icon:

Deathly Hallows = Pointless Deaths + Endless Camping

Agree! I winced as I typed that.

To be fair, I got the general intent behind it, as in, you were hoping maybe that Lily had become the symbol of the flesh-and-blood love he later found in Charity.

Oh, and isn't there subtext in that sentence. ;-) He certainly needed some charity in that world, didn't he!

Anyway, a lot of things can be missed on a first pass reading through. I'm not expecting anyone to attend to my fanfic as if it were for their graduate thesis. ;-)

THANK YOU FOR NOT MAKING SNAPE BE ALL IN LOVE WITH THE PAST. That's so creepy.

You're welcome, and amen. You'll never get Living For Lily and Lily Alone from me. Always.

Although a 10K word fic would be pretty awesome CB/SS too. ;-)

Now that I've written this, I rather like the idea of the pairing, so it may happen. I'd have to read through all of the books again, though, in order to give it proper context. Nice thing about post-war AU is I only have to have the character(s) down, not the Hogwarts setting. ;-)

OTOH, if I could figure out how to give Charity a post-war AU, that would solve that little problem. Still, I much like the idea of weaving their relationship into the Years of Canon.

This really is marvelous. I love how you make Charity a real person in such a few words. If only it weren't canon compliant. ;-)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.

I love how you make Charity a real person in such a few words.

You're saying I did in seven drabbles what JKR couldn't be arsed to do in seven volumes? :-D I'll accept that, thank you.

If only it weren't canon compliant. ;-)

Ah well, once in a while I have to be a bit of a deviant. ;-) The beauty of it, of course, is that it fits so well into canon that we can plausibly suppose there really was something between Severus and Charity.

As I'm sure I've said before, I see no reason why he couldn't go on to love someone else AND still harbor intense feelings of love and regret about Lily. People do--except, maybe, in JKR's universe of People Love Once and Only Once and If It Doesn't Work Out Then They Spend the Rest of Their Lives Chastely Pining. :-P
